“Playing Balasaheb has been a once in a lifetime opportunity”– Nawazuddin Siddiqui

As an actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has come a long way from supporting cast in Sarfarosh (1999) to becoming one of the biggest actors in India today. At the trailer launch of the Balasaheb Thackeray biopic, Thackeray, helmed by Sanjay Raut, Nawazuddin Siddiqui spoke about essaying the most difficult role of his career. “When I first heard that I am doing the role of Balasaheb Thackeray, it felt like the best moment of my life! This has been the most challenging role for me,” said the National Award-winning actor.

It goes without saying that portraying the role of one of the most potent and influential men of the country, would come with its own hurdles. But looking at Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s onscreen aplomb, one cannot gauge the kind of effort that must have gone into the prepping for this role. As they started to shoot, and as Nawazuddin Siddiqui got into the skin of the character, and saw a sea of people shouting Balasaheb Thackeray’s name, he grew anxious. Giving us a candid insight, he shared, “I couldn’t ever imagine the difficulty this role would offer and I started growing nervous with time. The director helped me ease into the role while we were shooting.”

“Balasaheb’s personality is so imposing that one can only try to live up to it. It has been a tremendous opportunity for me as an actor and I am ever thankful to Sanjay Raut,” added Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the Shiv Sena Supremo in Thackeray alongside Amrita Rao who will portray Meenatai Thackeray, with a team of dedicated national and international award-winning technicians. Presented by Sanjay Raut, produced by Raut’ers Entertainment LLP, Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Carnival Motion Pictures, directed by Abhijit Panse, Thackeray is slated for a worldwide release on January 25, 2019.

The Accidental Prime Minister

Starring Anupam Kher,Akshaye Khanna

Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte

If you enjoy political satires, The Accidental Prime Minister may not be the film that its makers would recommend for you. Outwardly, the intent and purpose of this fiercely political parable is to give us the “real” picture of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s parent party and how it manipulated him into fronting their dynastic designs.

And how much more real can it get than Anupam Kher as Mr Singh?! The beard, the turban ,the soft hushed barely audible voice (make sure you get your seats in a Dolby equipped theatre)…Kher gets the externals so right that we scarcely care about what lies beneath.

And what lies! If we are to believe this film, then Manmohan Singh was a baba in the woods, an angel in disguise, a scholar and academician thrown into the cesspit of politics, manipulated into supporting the Congress monarchy by a scheming mother-son pair. And we all know who they are, giggle giggle.

There is nothing accidental about The Accidental Prime Minister. The not-so-hidden agenda is to show Mrs Sonia Gandhi and her two children in the worst light possible. And it can’t get any worse than Suzanne Bernert as Mrs Sonia Gandhi. Suzanne arches her eyebrows so sharply I feared for her facial wellbeing.

Every actor cast as real-life politicians has been given a clear brief to look as much as the real-life politician as possible. The line between acting and mimicry is invisible in the politics that underlines this political charade. In the theatre I heard delighted exclamations of recognition, the kind we hear when a standup comedian does a Bachchan or a Shatrughan Sinha on stage.

If you want to play spot-the-politician, this film is huge fun. My top prize for the most enjoyable mimicry goes to the talented Arjun Mathur and Ahana Kumra as Rahul and Sonia Gandhi. If ever the real Gandhi siblings need duplicates while they holiday abroad they know where to go.

The only actor not doing an impersonation is Akshaye Khanna. Playing Sanjaya Baru, Khanna brings to the proceedings a gravitas that this film doesn’t need or deserve. He is like that one honest bureaucrat in the office filled with bribe takers. But he has his uses.

Khanna and Kher anchor the plot (and I am not talking about just the screenplay but the plot that underlines the raison d’etre of this film). Their exchanges exhibit sparks of unexpected irony and intelligence, as if two actors recognize the potential in each other knowing fully well their collective wisdom is unsupported by anything else around them.

Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna make the hullabaloo over Singh and the Gandhis look more tenable than it would have without them. The Accidental Prime Minister works well as a panto mine of power politics.Beyond that, we will have to wait for another day, another time, another regime.

Akshaye Khanna on playing Sanjaya Baru in The Accidental Prime Minister

The trailer of the film ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ has been creating ripples across various platforms ever since its launch. Based on Sanjaya Baru’s 2014 best-selling memoir by the same name, the movie breaks the wall between the Government and the common people. It shows a concealed perspective of the affairs inside the PMO during the ten-year tenure of the former PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Veteran Bollywood actor, Anupam Kher is playing the role of Ex PM Dr. Manmohan Singh whereas Akshaye Khanna would be breaking the fourth wall by essaying the role of his media advisor Sanjaya Baru. Talking about the film, the actor says, “This movie has been a different experience as for the first time I was narrating the film on screen. I am the only person who is not a politician or a bureaucrat in the film. My character was given the luxury of being creative which helped me to act and portray it freely.’’

In an illustrious career, Khanna has donned several hats and he feels that this role has been the most challenging for him. He adds, “This has been a huge project for every one of us, people are keen to know what was happening inside the Prime Minister’s office during the UPA 1 and 2. Dr. Manmohan Singh is one of the most respected Prime Minister and it was important for us to maintain his dignity and integrity throughout. We’ve just followed the facts that are mentioned in the book.’’

The actor further adds, “I am thrilled and excited to be a part of a venture that will be path-breaking and a game-changer at many levels. The Accidental Prime Minister will open flood gates to courageous political cinema in India.”

Rudra Productions (UK) Bohra Bros, in association with Dr. Jayantilal Gada (Pen), presents The Accidental Prime Minister. The film is produced by Sunil Bohra, Dhaval Jayantilal Gada and Bloom Arts Pvt. Ltd. released on January 11, 2019.

Bombairiya Music Review

#BeAnIdiot is the final shot on the trailer for the new Radhika Apte movie Bombairiya. This is a black comedy which involves an accident, a stolen phone, a video and just a lot of mess that will be untangled over the time of this movie. While the rest of the cast may not all be star names, this film certainly seems to say ‘interesting’ in the tag line. Arko Mukherjee is its music director and he delivers a short 4 song album which can only enhance a seemingly endless number of plot twists and turns.

Arko takes the mic for the first song Sanki. An opening of slow club synth beats with Punjabi lyrics, this is a song to introduce a girl who knows herself and certainly isn’t about to conform to someone else’s stereotypes. A changeup half way to rap which is a mix of English and Hindi simply brings this modern woman into the modern world around her, highlighting her no-nonsense way of life.

The next song takes on a more traditional sound and traditional lyrics in Bairiya. Navraj Hans is brought in to sing a sad but not slow Punjabi traditional song for the masses. Backed by tambourine and a synth sound close to a shehnai, an almost waltz beat keeps this song going throughout a long trudge of sadness. No need for tissues or a hanky, but time for self-reflection is available.

Sajde Karoon involes Yasser Desai, Meraj Warshi and the Warsi brothers in what can only be described as a sufi. So traditional is this sound and its lyrics that it could easily be expected to be heard outside Haji Ali, one of the most famous mosques anywhere. While this isn’t particularly interesting, it isn’t really a sound that listeners expect to be played around with so in this case that’s not a bad thing.

The last song is a return to Bairiya but this time with 2 voices and thus 20 seconds longer. Akriti Kakkar joins Navraj Hans for another look at this song, taking it to a properly sad level. Navraj delivers the same as he did for the earlier piece but its really Akriti who takes the spotlight with a pedal guitar giving her backing and takes this song to heart touching depths. While this is only a re-versioning of the original earlier in the album, it feels completely different on an emotional level.

In a story which seems to be focused on twists, the music in the album for the movie seems to be an interesting twist in itself. Taking out Sajde Karoon as it is what is expected, Arko has no real room to move, delivering 1 song in club beats and rap and the other 2 in sadness and self-reflection.

Undoubtably, this was the requirement as handed out by other members of the cinematic team and assuredly it serves a purpose within the film itself, but as an album it has nothing to offer a listener and stands as a sharp contrast to the teasers and trailers released for this film.

“Petta Is The Best Rajinikanth Film In Years” – A Subhash K Jha Review

Petta

Starring Rajinikanth, Vijay Sethupathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui,Simran, Trisha

Written & Directed by Karthik Subbaraj

In what seems like an unwanted political intrusion in an out-and-out formulistic entertainer, Vijay Sethupathi—who has a pivotal role to play in propelling the plot forward—is attacked in a cowshed by goons who accuse him of being a beef carrier.

Well, to be honest, Sethupathi does have quite a beefy role. In fact it’s the most powerfully written secondary part I’ve seen in any recent Rajinikanth starrer. Seethupathi plays Jeetu, a sleazy hitman in Uttar Pradesh who ends up being horribly confused about his parentage. In fact the script turns his parentage into a bit of a savage joke.

But director Karthik Subbaraj knows when to pull back the punches. He lets the 3-hour marathon masala fare roll on like a steamroller that knows exactly how to run its course without plundering any of the tropes in a Rajinikanth starrer. Petta is a film that satiates both the Rajini devotees and the non-devotees. While it harks back to his most famous screen avatars it gives a fresh fecund flavourful twist to every manoeuvre that brings the plot closer to its nemesis.

To begin with Rajini is a boisterous hostel warden who plays Uncle Cupid to a young couple. While aiding the courtship Rajini falls in love with a spiritual hero (Simran, looking lovely). This part of the film is light to the touch, frothy and tantalizing in a cute kind of way.

In the second half the plot simply takes off , creating a badland of bloodshed and retribution where bullets and bombs pelt down in a devastating tale of caste and communal wars. The clannish violence is cannily constructed to highlight Rajinikanth’s stage-capturing image. He has never looked so young in the past decade. He performs the action sequences and the dances with a disarming relish and his character doesn’t shy away from killing the enemies.

It all adds up to a visually rich drama replete with twists and turns that are not only unforeseen but also deftly written to accentuate Rajinikanth’s image. And yes, Nawazuddin Siddiqui makes a formidable adversary. The confrontations between the two leading to a bloodied finale leaves no room for the audiences to exhale.

When was the last time I had so much fun watching a Rajinikanth film? The last few years topped by the appalling 2:0 last month have been pretty abysmal. Pehaps the Thalaiva, as he’s called by his devotees, had begun to take himself too seriously in his recent films.

In Petta, Rajini doesn’t allow his swagger to be weighed down by responsibilities. A genuine sense of fun runs through the taut plot. Except for a few stretches where the director seems to lose grip (for instance the early scenes in the hostel are way too flighty ) this tale of a father-figure fighting to save a young boy (Sananth Sethi) from murderous enemies is just what the Rajinikanth image needed at this juncture.

Anil Kapoor dances his heart out in the song Ishq Mitha with daughter Sonam Kapoor

Sharing the screen space for the first time, the father-daughter duo of Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor dance it off in the wedding song, Ishq Mitha, from their upcoming film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. The song is the remake of the 1986 song, Gud Naal Ishq Mithaby British music producer Bally Sagoo and sung by Mallkit Singh. The reprised version of the song from the film set to make audiences dance to its tunes as well as find its place in any wedding playlist this year.

Stepping out his best foot forward to dance his heart out, Anil Kapoor brings all his energy in the song, dancing with daughter, Sonam on-screen.

Composed by Rochak Kohli, Ishq Mitha is sung by crooned by Navraj Hans and Harshdeep Kaur, with lyrics penned by Gurpreet Saini.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is all set to hit the screens on February 1, 2019. Directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, the film also stars Rajkummar Rao and Juhi Chawla in leading roles.

Some love stories are not simple; Sweety’s is one such story. She has to contend with her over-enthusiastic family that wants to get her married, a young writer who is completely smitten by her, a secret that she harbours close to her heart and ultimately the truth that her true love might not find acceptance in her family and society. Resolving this issue proves hilarious, touching and life changing.

Welcome to the most unexpected romance of the year!

“Why Cheat India Scores High Marks”- A Subhash K Jha Review

Why Cheat India

Starring Emraan Hashmi, Shreya Dhanwanthary

Directed by Soumik Sen

Relevant topical films frequently fall into the trap of overstatement. But here is where Why Cheat India scores high marks. It succeeds avoiding the imbalance between topicality and engagingness by simply letting the actors be.

The characters in this film exposing the scam of forged duplicate examinees don’t quite develop into the explosive entities they promise to. Their working class psyche shines in their disability to generate spectacular drama. Hearts are broken, young lives are destroyed, marriages fall apart, and ambition dissolve…But life goes on.

Director Soumik Sen sees life in trivia. In the way the characters speak of their unremarkable life, the film creates quite a remarkable litany of bustling boredom. Take for example the character of the protagonist Rakesh alias Rocky’s wife. She is so immersed in her life of mundane domesticity she never imagines there could be any other life than what she has. She gives him sex. But it’s clinical cold and uninviting. In one sequence in their bedroom Rocky suggests sex after a long hiatus. The wife doesn’t catch on at all and babbles on about the household activities. At the end when her husband is in jail she arrives with tiffins full of food and begins the serving the food to her husband and his associates as though it was part of an everyday routine.

Why Cheat India is not about Rocky’ wife. It’s about his hunger to create a ‘New” India with underprivileged and perhaps undeserving students being given a push by substitute candidates writing their examination papers. This life of shocking duplicity never elicits harsh censure in the film. The narrative’s tone suggests that our social order gets the kind of moral structure that it deserves.

The Rocky Bhaiyyas of Hindustan make full use of the Indian middleclass’ unfulfilled ambitions and dreams. Astonishingly Rocky sees no harm in scamming the Indian middleclass of its dreams and money.

This is a film about unfulfilled dreams and abducted yearnings, shot by cinematographer Y. Alphnose Roy about a brilliant student called Sattoo (impressive newcomer Singhadeep Chatterjee) whose career is destroyed by Rocky’s patronage. I felt the bonding between the student and his mentor was not played out closely enough. We never feel Satoo’s disappointment. The growing relationship between Rocky and Sattoo’s sister (outstanding discovery Shreya Dhanwanthary) gets far more space to breathe.

By the end of the film Raja Bhaiyya loses all his hard-earned fame and money. As we stare into the void of his life there emerges from the mound of immorality a kind of hope.

“Bombairiya Is A Crazily Heartwarming Homage To Mumbai” – A Subhash K Jha Review

Bombairiya
Starring Radhika Apte, Akshay Oberoi, Ravi Kissan, Siddhant Kapoor, Adil Hussain, Amit Sial
Directed by Pia Sukanya

Mumbai, or Bombay as we all know it, is a schizophrenic city. Inviting welcoming affectionate and warm one minute, hostile, intimidating and disorienting the next…. Bombairiya captures the polarized propensities of the split city with vigour and humour.

Sure, towards the midpoint the edifice of chaos built on the premise of ‘One Day in the Life Of Radhika Apte’(she gets top solo billing) begins to fall apart. And you feel the film is trying to cram in too much physical activity at the cost of giving the plot and the characters space to breathe.

But then , this is a homage to a breathless city. And the rhythms of the film follow suit.No time to ask why. Just act.

There is an unstoppable energy about the film that doesn’t always work in its favour. Often times, I felt the characters were running away from themselves and from us, the audience. The relentless bhaag–daud (helter-skelter) eventually seeps into the character-driven narrative. But before it does, the people who populate the bustle over the hustle are thrown so close to our affections that we want the progressively spiralling plot to somehow come together for their sake.

The writing favours defining interactive moments on a random beat that bring strangers together. There is Meghna (Apte) running around a vain philandering film star Karan Kapoor (Ravi Kissan, in splendid form as usual) when she collides into a courier man (Siddhant Kapoor). Within minutes she is “rescued” by an incredibly kindhearted goodlooking dude Abhishek who gets busy solving all of Meghna’s problem on the road, from replacing her lost shoes with his spare sneakers, to talking to her Daadi on the phone about her horribly askewed love life (Jim Sarbh shows up as her ex-boyfriend in a one-scene appearance), to accompanying her through an adventure that leaves a lot of ‘huh’ spaces in the narrative. It all gets into scramble that scampers clumsily intoa church at the end.

But when the going is good, the plot and performances simply rock. The underrated underused Shilpa Shukla as Ravi Kissan’s bossy suspicious politician-wife has just a couple of scenes to make her presence felt. And she gets to it without losing a beat. Equally memorable is Dhanendra Kawade as a cop trying to do the right thing by a city hellbent onbeing mischievous.

Come to think of it, the actors are all in dazzling form. Is Radhika Apte ever caught on the wrong foot (even when she is without footwear in this film)? She manages to keep ahead of the ferocious flurry in the plot even when having to suddenly do a little kissy-smoochy scene with Akshay Oberoi’s reluctant fiancée-to-be (who is, sigh, a lesbian)…or made to sing a Bhajan in the car with Oberoi’s parents (nicely played by Paromita Chatterjee and Abhijit Bhor).

Siddhant Kapoor is also exceptionally interesting in his role of a reluctant accomplice to a crime.

Adil Hussain as a jailed politician and Amit Sial as a pivotal character propelling the drama ahead to its anarchic finale (I confess I didn’t really get a fix on his place in the saturated plot), convey so much with their silent smirks. But my favourite is Akshay Oberoi who never lets a script down. Here he succeeds in keeping his angelic character from getting disastrously boring. Oberoi is an actor who never disappoints. Here is a film that will make you smile to the end even when the going gets really tough for the proceedings.

You know someone up there is looking out for the characters. And it isn’t God.

Producer Johar also has praised Alia’s performance in the film saying recently, I saw something that Alia had done in ‘Kalank’ and I was just so moved by the work she had done. I won’t disclose what it is (but) she has done something in the film. You know when I see Alia I get that feeling like I’m seeing my daughter perform. And because I have that emotion for her I just started crying in the end for some weird reason. I’m going through something internally which I’m not aware of and I just got very teary. And I rang her up and said her I got very emotional, well done.”

Karan also tweeted

Anil and Madhuri did their stunts for Total Dhamaal!

Of course every Bolly-fan is excited that Indra Kumar’s Total Dhamaal has reunited the iconic duo of Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit after 26 years. While the actors will be seen creating amazing scenes onscreen we have learned that the duo will be seen in the movie with a twist.

In a never seen before avatar, Anil and Madhuri will be performing adventurous stunts for the film. For a scene in the film the duo had to drive on a wrecked bridge over a valley, to take it to the next level the duo performed stunts over a real rapid!

Indra Kumar shares, “Anil and Madhuri for both of them, its been a long time and they generally don’t do this kind of stunts anymore, but I made them jump from a height of maybe around 300 feet! And Anil and Madhuri both themselves did their actual stunts! They had to jump through a waterfall, their car goes over the waterfall and they are sitting on top of the car and they jump off and the car also comes down with them. So it was a shot which required them to do this. I didn’t want to use duplicates or stunt doubles and told them that they have to give this shot themselves. I wanted a wide shot and looking at the scene, even i was quite apprehensive. If you told me to jump I wouldn’t! But they had the guts and bravado, being such great professionals that they jumped and it is a beautiful shot in the film. And there was a bridge which they needed to cross, it was again 200 feet in height and it was very weak and on that they had to drive. We had the fear that it might just collapse if there was the slightest pressure. But God has been kind and we got a great shot. Being a never seen before adventure comedy and with so much of stunts involved, you have to take a risk. We took the risks and the result is there for the audiences to see when the film releases!”

Manikarnika Music Review

$
0
0

For Indians, there are many figures of repute who go down in history as freedom fighters. Gandhi and Nehru, Bose and Bhagat Singh are just a few of the brave souls who took on an invading force. But even before all these great men comes Manikarnika. Those who do not know the name are likely to remember the children’s poem by Rani Laxmibai with the now epic line “Khoob Ladi Mardani Woh To Jhansi Wali Rani Thi”. Kangana Ranaut reprises the role of Jhansi Ki Rani and throughout teasers and trailers shows a woman who stood where others fell and bravely fought a foreign invader.

From a musical perspective, this is thus a film heavily steeped in patriotism, mixed in with the human story that we might get in any biopic, so we can expect a combination of stirring and pride filled renditions with an odd soft sound to remind the audience that Manikarnika is still just a person. To get this right, Shankar Ehsaan and Loy have been invited to put together this 8-song soundtrack together.

Shankar Mahadevan brings his well-known voice to the mic for the album opener and ender Bharat. While in a male voice in both versions, this is a mother’s song to her child with the line “Mein rahu ya na rahu Bharat yeh rehna chahiye”. The backing of ektara and flute and the addition of ghungroo and violins round off this image, giving the song a lullaby quality but not enough to put anyone to sleep. Drums are added about half way to build the sound and a mixed chorus makes it a song for all, a sort of rallying cry for all those in love with their land. In Version 2 which ends this album, there is a male narrator of the lyrics who recites each line before sung by Shankar Mahadevan which while isn’t much different, certainly brings the lyrics to the forefront and drives the patriotism within.

The next two songs can be paired together as they bring out the ill-treatment of the people which will eventually force the hand of Manikarnika to act against British forces. Vijayi Bhava and Bolo Kab Pratikar Karoge use the patriotism built by Bharat and remind the audience that this was a tough time to be an Indian. ‘Vijayi Bhava’ tells the tale of loss of hope within the people, who can feel their own presence slowly but surely being smashed by the emergence of the British empire. ‘Bolo Kab Pratikar Karoge’ takes this feeling to the next level with the lyrics “Pooch raha astitva tumhara kab tak aise var sahoge”. Choruses are employed in both as the voice of the people, however cleverly in some parts they are a cheer squad, in others accusers imploring Jhansi Ki Rani to stand up to those who would hurt their pride. Both employ powerful drums and horns with the soft violins to represent the people. The real difference between the two is the singers. Shankar Mahadevan brings a softer but urgent tone to ‘Vijayi Bhav’, whereas Sukhwinder Singh brings his trademark style to ‘Bolo Kab Pratikar Karoge’ to really hit it home.

As expected amid all the anger and patriotism there is still a need to remember that before being people of high status, these were just people. So, we have Rajaji and its female equivalent Taki Tami. Both are softer tones, simple, interesting and pleasant tunes. Both sung by Pratibha Singh Baghel who manages to find different voices for her part in each. ‘Rajaji’ is a playful song, sometimes teasing, sometimes warmly hugging Rajaji who seems lost in love. Gentle earthen instruments sit behind and let the singer take full charge. Ravi Mishra singing on behalf of the male, gives a version of a strong but fair Raja turning into a lovestruck fool. ‘Taki Tami’ seems to be in the events of the wedding, taking a purely female perspective on the events of the day. A mandolin is applied to describe the fleeting excitement that escapes during what is both a nervous but also patient time.

In between these two love songs comes the power that is the Shiv Tandav. As is traditional, and the song being likely used as part of a festival, only dhumroo and big drums accompany a 2-layer chorus. Shankar Mahadevan takes the mic to sing about his namesake with traditional lyrics often used to celebrate the coming of Shiva. Nothing special in this song, but you wouldn’t want to play with this too much anyway.

Of course, no Bollywood film is complete without an item song so Prajakta Shukre, Shrinidhi Ghatate, Siddharth Mahadevan and Arunaja come together to deliver Dankila. Drums, singers and dance are in abundance here. Horns and choruses keep the bridges alive and moving, but this is a sort of song that washes over a listener without leaving any distinguishing features. Its fun, those who like to dance certainly will and then, as a cinemagoer, its back to the film world.

Twenty years after the death of Manikarnika, Colonel Malleson wrote in the History of the Indian Mutiny: “Whatever her faults in British eyes may have been, her countrymen will ever remember that she was driven by ill-treatment into rebellion, and that she lived and died for her country, We cannot forget her contribution for India.” When even the enemy is giving plaudits and telling the world about the exploits of Jhansi ki Rani, there is certainly something to the story.

The album fits into this well, with the 2 versions of Bharat and the songs of empowerment delivering strong messages to the audience both of the world they are being taken to as well as the feelings of those living in it. Remembering that Manikarnika is just 1 person in all this, we are treated to 2 love songs which are soft and melodious as needed. However, once the film is over there isn’t anything to remind listeners of these songs. Neither do the lyrics resonate with a modern audience as modern Indians whether in India or outside are not in a state of oppression.
