Rajma Chawal Movie Review

$
0
0

Literally meaning beans and rice, Rajma Chawal is a new movie in Hindi directed, produced and written by Leena Yadav. Rajma Chawal is a staple of many middle-class households throughout north India, but as a title it belies the underlying web of weirdness that makes this film a 6/10 on IMDb. Starring venerable actor Rishi Kapoor as well as Aniruth Tanwar and Amyra Dastur in the lead roles, this is a simple story that quickly goes sideways.

From a story point of view, this is a story about how loss affects each one of us in different ways… a story about the love of a father has for his son, but also a story of moving on with life. Raj Mathur (Rishi Kapoor) having been cheated in business, and upon the death of his wife, decides one day to shift to Chandni Chowk – a part of Old Dehli, with his son Kabir. Raj also sells his house in New Dehli without Kabir’s knowledge to pay off his outstanding debts. Kabir who is greatly attached to his mother considers the house to be the last memories he had with her. This is the beginning of a big change for both and each deal with it differently.

Kabir’s ambition is to be a singer in a band that did the New Dehli circuit. His taste in music was encouraged by his mother. Kabir misses his mother, their house in New Dehli, his old band friends and totally resents his father’s old-fashioned ways. Tension builds as father and son don’t talk. A lot of work goes in here from the cinematographer to keep scenes as natural as possible, allowing the actors to show the disdain their characters have for each other.

On the other hand, meeting up with family and friends in Chandni Chowk, Raj is very happy to be back at home and wonders why he left in the first place. They hit upon an idea to create a Facebook account of a girl under the name Tara. Once Tara connects with Kabir, communication is flowing and constant. Background music here builds both joy and tension as Kabir starts to find his feet in his new home and Raj finds a way to speak with his son.

However, Tara isn’t a fake account as it turns out to be Seher’s (Amyra Dastur) in real life. Raj convinces her to help him get Kabir back on side rather than breaking the myth of Tara that has brought father and son closer together. All seems well until an actual relationship blossoms between Kabir and Seher and Raj losing control of the situation accuses Seher which breaks open the story into a role-reversed formula film of the 90s. Rishi Kapoor who’s film Bobby started this theme of two young people falling in love whatever anyone else has to say about it until they convince everyone over to their way of thinking, has now come full circle on him and really does give the film a bit of a sour taste in the climax.

The songs throughout these parts are all songs sung by Kabir as part of his band, some of which occur because they reinforce an emotion the dialogue has recalled or as a way for him to remember his mother. Since it was his mother that encouraged this way for Kabir, this is not a surprise, but they don’t do much as music on their own as they are completely tied to the story.

Nevertheless, as with Bobby we return in the end to a happy resolution as Raj and Kabir finally come to an understanding of one another and Kabir finds life happiness with his love Seher. This completes the circle and reinforces the accidental theme of if you can’t beat them, join them. If as a viewer you were interested in thought provoking movies this isn’t one of them, but neither is it just a pure entertainer as there are genuine moments of thought provocation. Still, at the end of the day, this is about finding you feet when everything around you is changing and then standing up for yourself when all those around you believe you are wrong. Each character displays this well in their roles and no doubt each actor fulfils this theme in their portrayal. But since its both formulaic and off-beat, it feels completely middle of the road from a story point of view. The music doesn’t do much, but the cinematography and direction are strong.

Manto Movie Review

$
0
0

In today’s Bollywood there is only one star of rap “Raftaar”. A man whose lyrics are clear, but not clean. Whose powerful versus strike at the heart of all listeners while his beats entertain on the screens of streaming media platformers. When music director Sneha Khanwalkar wanted a title song for her latest album Manto, she turned to him to bring his talents. What Raftaar delivered was Mantoiyat: an idealisation of the man behind the story.

Manto the album backs Manto the film, a biopic of the famous Urdu playwright Saadat Hasan Manto, a pre-independence script writer whose films annoyed everyone because he wrote stories that portrayed people, especially girls and young women, as they were treated in that time from his perspective. As he says in the movie “Agar aap meri kahani ko bardaasht nahin kar sakte, to iska yeh matlab hai, ke yeh zamana na kaabile bardaasht hai” (If you can’t bear my story, then it can only mean that the society we live in is unbearable). In doing so this biopic also touches upon the events of his life… we get to see the great stars of Bollywood of the time e.g. the premier actor Ashok Kumar and the music director Naushad, as well as the racism that was reaped upon a newly divided India as the English Raj left having created the new state of Pakistan.

Directed and produced by Nandita Das, this film digs deep into Manto’s struggles to portray the raw and naked truth about human emotions under stressful and painful situations. Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s acting as Manto, was without compare in every scene and he was able to bring out the great frustration that the writer must have been feeling at the time. There are great scenes of worry when he crosses boundaries between Hindu and Muslim settlements. Even more so for his friends, some of whom are magnanimous, using their fame to show that even the new India is one land. Others show the beginnings of division that survives even today and gets stirred up when convenient. Supporting him is Manto’s wife played by Rasika Dugal who plays the ever supportive and loving partner, trying her hardest to forgive him for his trespasses and encouraging him on with his work. She stands by him even when he must face courts and all the way till his demise at the young age of 42. Even though she always takes the role behind-the-scenes, her character is determined and powerful in her own right and the actress delivers when it counts.

The music used within the film feels like an LP record had dropped out of the 1940s. All the big names of the microphone are involved with references to Shamshad Begum, Noor Jehan, K L Saigal and Shyam Sunder. While there are only 3 songs each is used to perfection to counterpoint difficult parts of a complicated story, one to give a light opening to the film, one to celebrate independence but remember the cost of it and the final one in the days of Manto’s demise brings his life to a sad but soft end. For those who have been privileged to listen to these greats, whether by having been around at the time or having heard it on their parent’s laps, these songs do the period credit but also find a way to be sufficiently modern as not to bore the modern audience.

To give this film a rating or to understand its true quality, the cinemagoer only needs to look at the words chosen by Raftaar to speak about the man: “Maine ghanto para hai tumko Manto. Tera jaisa hi banu kare yeh mera maan to”… this film is good enough that even Raftaar wants to be just like the man it is based on and after all isn’t that what a biopic is for? Of course the fact that Netflix has chosen to add it to its viewing list is simply a testament of its beauty.

A story about Rani Laxmibai and her fight against the British East India Company, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi captures the life of the 22-year-old Queen of Jhansi who refused to cede Jhansi to the British Empire. She was the first woman in the history of India to fight against the British in the cry of Independence. Despite fighting a fierce battle, she was killed in the combat. “Zero Is Shah Rukh’s Career’s Best” – A Subhash K Jha Review

$
0

Zero

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma

Directed by Aanand L Rai

When this achingly irreverent ode to misfits was over, I thought, how wonderful that Zero is dedicated to Sridevi. No more befitting homage could be paid to an entertainer who brought us smiles all through her career.

Bauua Singh of Meerut is like that only. He is a dwarf, and let’s not soften the blow by beating around the bush about his shortcoming. The brilliantly askew screenplay by Himanshu Sharma certainly doesn’t shy away from addressing disabilities. This is a film that calls a spade a spade and then shovels us a welter of speckled wisdom that I last saw in Forrest Gump. Zero is like a box of assorted chocolates. You never know what the feeling would be in the next one.

Indeed Tom Hanks from Forrest Gump would have chuckled approvingly at the insolent antics of Bauua Singh and his pal Guddu Singh (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, torch in hand, hair dyed blonde) as they turn the crowded city of Meerat into their personal arena of gratification. The film opens with a wacky sambar-western dream sequence where we see a ‘normal’ Shah Rukh Khan taking on his worst enemy in the world his father (Tigmanshu Dhulia, doing a Sudhir Pandey) whose shrunken scrotum the dwarf hero openly blames for his shortcomings. Mom Sheebha Chadha is too jaded to be embarrassed.

This is the only time Shah Rukh stands at his actual height in the film. It reminded me of that one time in Koyla when the ‘mute’ Shah Rukh Khan spoke up in a dream sequence because the distributors and exhibitors wanted a ‘normal’ Shah Rukh to speak up.

Ask Bauua Singh if he cares.

Zero is a film that doesn’t believe in numbers. In no time at all we lose count of the number of times we loath Bauua’s self-obsession and then fall in love with his character again for doing something unexpected that nobody believes he could . Like that kiss which the super-hot Babita Kumari smacks on his wet lips. Or for that matter, like this completely unexpected film from a uperstar who spent all his life playing only one role and has now discovered the freedom of exploring people who are flawed fractured and therefore simply fabulous.

Oh, I forgot! What is Zero about? Well, it is about three fractured lives, people who don’t feel sorry for their deficiencies and never threaten fall apart because there is really nowhere to go once you hit zero. Rather, they pity those who waste time pitying them. Bauaa Singh in pursuit of a life partner courts and wins and loses the cerebral palsy inflicted space scientist Afia (Anushka Sharma, in an embarrassingly artificial performance) because…well, he has the hots for screen queen Babita Kumari.

As Babita, Katrina Kaif just tears the screen apart. Now where did that come from? Kaif is so stunning in her role as a dumped alcoholic actress, she gave me goosebumps every time her kohl-laden eyes swelled up with unshed tears. In one of the film’s most enchanting episodes she drags Bauaa out of her party and then drags herself out of a relationship that has her chained to misery.

In another episode of magical misgivings Bauua woos Afia in the corridor of a posh hotel with the the colours of Holi, a symphonic orchestra and little girls creating a cascade of chorus rhapsodies that only a Bauua Singh could conceive. The mesmeric moments ends abruptly with the hotel manager complaining about the mess on his premise.

Bathos, a word I am sure Bauua doesn’t know, rules his life. To no one’s surprise he decides to chase his lost love all the way to the US, becomes an astronaut and replaces the moody monkey that was supposed to fly to Mars.

Why would Bauua want to be expelled to outerspace? Good question. He has a very special affinity with the stars, the ones and above. And when the stars on earth mock him for his overweening ambitions his ego, much larger than his physical stature, revolts.

There are many passages of lyrical beauty in this gem of a film, passages that may pass you by like ships sailing in the night, if you aren’t vigilant. Because, really, Bauaa, doesn’t care if you are watching or not.

Zero is a film made out of the impulse to woo whimsy without getting anxious over the audiences’ attention. Not all of it coheres, many sequences stand apart in stubborn isolation, and Anushka Sharma’s performance brings the narrative down considerably.

But finally Zero works. It celebrates incompleteness as no other movie in any language has ever done. Like the film, Bauaa Singh isn’t afraid to fail. He has the great immortal Sridevi telling him it’s okay to fail. I couldn’t ask for more. Can you?
